Adding a Course to the Common Core Curriculum
The Schools of Liberal Arts and Science maintain three lists
of general education courses within the Common Core Curriculum:
List H: Humanities
List S: Social Sciences
List C: Comparative World Cultures.
Courses on these lists have some common properties:
- They have a serious writing component.
- They are accessible to students from all academic backgrounds.
- They are almost exclusively at the 100 or 200 level and
thus have few or no prerequisites.
- Their content is consistent with the descriptions of the
lists (Some courses are on more than one list.)
To propose the inclusion of another course on one of these
lists, the following information should be submitted to the
Core Curriculum Committee:
- Name, rank or status, department, and contact information
for the faculty member proposing the course's addition to
a list
- Department, course name and number (if known), number
of credits.
- Is this a new course? If so, has it been approved?
- On which general education list(s) should the course
be included and why?
- Which IUPUI Principles of Undergraduate Learning are
being addressed in this course?
- When do you (or your department) plan to offer the course?
How often? Please attach an endorsement from the department
chair.
- Describe the course content and work requirements for
students. What feedback will the students get? Attach a
syllabus with enough detail for the committee to make an
informed judgment of the suitability of the course for this
list.
- What are the writing requirements for the course? (For
example, what term papers, how long, would there be essay
questions, etc.)
Anyone wishing to propose other changes to the core curriculum
should contact one of the committee co-chairs.
